Droplet evaporation of alcohol-biodiesel blends

Despite recent research on blends of biodiesel with higher alcohols in Diesel engines, no information their behaviour as single droplets is available. This work presents experimental data the droplet evaporation 1-propanol and 1-pentanol compares them to results numerical models evaporation. The phase equilibrium non-ideal mixture alcohol was modelled using activity coefficients calculated from UNIFAC method, which shown accurately reproduce VLE literature. Droplet experiments were performed for 1-propanol/biodiesel 1-pentanol/biodiesel at temperatures 450 °C 700 °C. modelling compared two different liquid models: well-mixed diffusion-limited. diffusion-limited model found best represent process, particularly early lifetime. Internal boiling bubble formation observed all mixtures, driven by large difference point between components (around 200˚C). also able roughly predict conditions under could occur.
